FROM PILOT TO EXPERTISE: DECARBONIZING THE PORT ECOSYSTEM

The inauguration of the onshore power supply (OPS) transformer in Maashaven, Port of Rotterdam, marked the beginning of a transformative journey toward port decarbonization.

Initially launched as a pilot project to reduce CO₂ emissions, fine particulate matter, and noise pollution from inland shipping, it laid the foundation for a new era in sustainable port energy solutions.

Recognizing the vast potential and opportunity, this initiative evolved into a bold effort to reshape the port’s energy paradigm. Greening the city and the port became a priority for both the Mayor and the Port of Rotterdam CEO—though constrained by the limits of their mandates. To drive systemic change, collaboration with CEOs from key industries—energy, shipping, logistics, and beyond—fueled the development of innovative concepts like Virtual Power Plants and Smart Grids.

Today, this momentum has solidified into a specialized and sophisticated expertise in port energy. By pioneering dedicated energy hubs, we are positioning ourselves among Europe's leaders in the transition to a cleaner, more resilient, and strategically integrated port ecosystem.
